ABOUT THE WORK

THE ARTIST, My thoughts.

Art is paradox, a reality and yet an illusion.

All of it.

My current paintings are an interaction and collaboration of mood, light and shadow within contemporary dancers physical mingling. Touching, emerging and the use of negative space creating tension and an almost brooding eroticism. It’s an evolving exploration in a restricted pallet. Normally a portrait artist I decided to break free of those commission based images and try to give back something of me, equally a work in progress. After the production of the triptych, I have always been interested in classicism, a work that springs to mind is William Adolphe Bouguereau’s The Abduction of Psyché. I hung on my wall as a print picked up in a flea market years ago. It spoke to me of how love should feel, and at that time, I remember it did. So the protective embrace by a being higher than self has always figured in the back of my mind somewhere and I decided to see how the addition of wings to my embracing, moving figures changed the viewers perception of it. Most of my work is untitled, not because I can’t find the words, but because, and as art should, it asks the question of the viewer. What do you see or feel. I suppose I could put words to them, and I guess another process is seeing if you’d agree with it.

I’ll continue to explore this realm for a while. I get a great buzz from each work. Some succeed and some fail. But then the greatest gift is seeing the smile on someone’s face when they love it. That is all that art should do. In my opinion.
